The Sporty Eclipse was first released
in 1989. A high performance creation born out of a joint development
between Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and MMMA (Mitsubishi Motor
Manufacturing of America, Inc.), formerly Diamond Star Motors. That same
year, it received the "Industrial Design Excellence Award" from the
Industrial Design Society of America.
The Eclipse, while harnessing the
latest in innovative technologies and ergonomic comfort features, is
designed to appeal to a variety of users with different lifestyles and
budgets. The new generation Eclipse boasts a low-slung aerodynamic
design, an aggressive rear spoiler and fog lamps.
To assure sports car like handling,
the Eclipse incorporates a sophisticated 4IS (four-wheel independent
suspension), speed-sensitive power assisted rack and pinion steering and
power assisted ventilated front brakes with an optional ABS (Anti-lock
Braking System).
The Eclipse GSX models high
performance power comes from a turbocharged, 2.0 litre, DOHC multi-valve
engine which has a maximum output of 210HP.
This power is transmitted via either a
smooth action manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission
featuring a "fuzzy logic". The Eclipse's performance more than lives up
to its name without costing an arm and a leg.
