The 75 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Pics, Specs and History
Hi: These are my 75 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Pics, Specs and History and my name is Francat Cambell-McGregor from Worthing, West Sussex, United Kingdom.
Here are some of the 75 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible Specs:
History:
Bought it February of 2006. It's rusted to hell underneath but hell it looks chic outside with its pure cream leather seats and white top and I just fell in love with the old tub, even though it ain't logical. Local friend Steve is trying his best to stitch new plates onto old base at front and back corners.
I hate to think what's gonna run to in bucks, or GB pounds here. Years back when I was a
college boy, I had a 57 version of the same car, so its a case of nostalgia, as opposed to plain common sense.
Here is a true story and no film has been made of it either!... It happened in the early sixties when I was a college undergraduate. As a result of a wager I got myself into a stupid student prank with my Kharman Cabriolet Beetle.
In that crazy 60's era, my College or University as it is now, had its very own dedicated college mascot. What the purpose of this mascot was, I don't know... But anyway, I think it was dedicated and dead... A stuffed Deer, Moose or Goat's Head, mounted on the College walls. Something very trivial.
The student ruling committee the gliterati were most proud of it and paraded it on rag week, etc. until the day a rival local College stole it. Great anguish & loss of College street creed etc. etc. resulted. The student Union then decided to set about making the world's only unstealable mascot! One which no rival college or gang could ever hijack again, or so they thought.
They fashioned a huge heavy weight dedicated Egyptian Mummy cast in concrete lying in its steel coffin/casket and then the boasting and crowing started... How this was so unstealable, etc. etc. I found the whole business of mascots etc. childish and boring and the boasting was becoming almost pagan like idolatry.
I was never part of the inner sanctum of student cliche. This endless prattling about this Mummy got so bad, one day as a result of a wager, i.e. that the mascot was unstealable, I bet it wasn't.
Oh dear... I decided with the help of a friend and using the Beetle to sneak the Mummy away.
This was a SNATCH a casket operation in the middle of the night, planned with military precision. We must have been crazy.
The Mummy must have weighed close to 1/2 a ton so how we got it out of the college I will never know, but we did and no one saw us. The place was deserted empty. It was sort of Troy reversed, the wooden horse scenario etc.
Finally, we levered it into the Volks with the hood down. It was way past midnight so there were no cops about luckily.
What this must have looked like is unimaginable. A Volkswagen dub Cabriolet hood down in the middle of the night with two blokes in the front seats and a huge Sarcophagus (ok Egyptian Mummy) upright in the rear.
Needless to say, we kept off the main highways and used old country lanes. Finally we found an old Barn in the middle of the countryside & we hid the Mummy there under a pile of straw. We presumed someone would find in in a couple of days and the story would be out and in due course it would be safely returned to the college. Of course, I envisioned how there would be more boasting then saying how they had recovered the stolen mummy. In fact there was uproar in the college. No one could figure out who had done it or how it had been done. Paradoxically months went by and nothing was heard about the Mummy, it had vanished into thin air.
I couldn't understand how, but this was of course NOT a good time to volunteer info, so I prudently stayed quite. I do remember feeling that it was really poetic justice and I savoured that time. Looking back It was pure fun.
Now, although no harm was done to property or anyone, I realize how reckless it was and doubtless I should have been concentrating on my studies. If I had been caught scant sympathy would have been shown.
Months later there was this story in the press how some farmer had jumped out of his skin in astonishment whilst raking thru some straw in his barn and finding an egyptian mummy there.
I think they got their mascot back but by then I had left College... Just as well!
