History of the Torino's beginnings:

The Torino was manufactured by Ford between 1968 and 1976 for the North American market. Named after Turin (Torino) an Italian city considered as being the Italian Detroit. The Torino was originally an upscale adaptation of the Ford Fairlane which was produced by Honda between 1962 and 1970. After 1968, the name Fairlane was used for base models which had lower grades of trim than the Torino had.

By early 70’s Torino had become the primary Ford's mid-size car, the Fairlane being a sub series of the Torino. Back in 71 the name Fairlane was dropped and all mid-size Fords were Torinos. This was one of several names proposed for the Mustang while in development. The Torino was practically a twin of the Mercury Montego line.

A lot of Torinos were conventional automobiles and generally the most popular styles were the 4-door sedans as well as 4-door hardtops. However, Ford manufactured some high performance editions of the Torino by installing large engines with high output such as the 428 Cubic Inches (7 L) and the 429 Cubic Inches (7 L) "Cobra-Jet" engine. The Torinos fitted with these engines fall into the muscle cars classification. The Torino was also Ford’s choice as the base for NASCAR entrants and it has a very successful racing heritage.
