The 68 Dodge Polara Police Car Pics, Specs and History
Hi: My name is Matt Lyons from Oceanside California and these are my 68 Dodge Polara Police Car Pics, Specs and History.
Specs:
Engine 318 cu. in. V8
Overall Length: 220.8"
Automatic Transmission
Wheelbase: 122"
Traditional Police Black and White paint scheme, with dog dish hub caps and whip antenna!
History:
In 2003, I bought this car in Washington State for $2,000.00 from a private
owner. It was in mostly good condition, except for the interior seat and head liner. The engine smoked and needed a good once over (Gaskets, plugs, tune up,
etc.). My son Justin and I made this a project to replicate an old police car used
at the Oceanside, California Police Department.
It took us about 9 months and a total of
$6500.00, to get the car up and running fully (working straight through most
every night after work). It was a lot of fun doing this with my son. This car is
used in parades and other civic functions and is a real crowd pleaser with old
siren and cherry light on top (Much like the car used on Andy Griffith Show).
The Dodge Polara was a standard car used by many police agencies in the United
States (Especially California and South West). The car number would have been an
800 series number, (Given that it was a 1968 model). However, I took the liberty
to use the number 269, which was the badge number of Oceanside City Police
Officer Tony Zeppetella, who was killed in the line of duty June 13, 2003 (To
honor his memory and service!). It is registered in California as a Historic
Vehicle!
Webmaster's comments:
As I am sure you agree, there is not much I can add to what the owner of the 68 Dodge Polara Police Car said above. However, I'll add this much... I think that it's very honorable that he is keeping alive the memory of one of his fellow Police Officers who was killed in the line of duty.
